Folic acid:
Essential for every cell
Folic acid is a water-soluble nutrient from the group of B vitamins; it is also known as vitamin B9 or folate. Because it plays a central role in the formation of blood, cells and genetic material, women who wish to have children and pregnant women should take it as a supplement: The supplementary intake of folic acid increases folate levels in pregnant women. A low folate level in pregnant women is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the growing fetus. The positive effect is achieved with a supplemental intake of 400 μg folic acid daily over a period of at least one month before and up to three months after conception. It is also advisable to consume sufficient folic acid during breastfeeding to support the baby's growth and development. Growing children and adolescents also have an increased need for folic acid. A good folate supply also benefits immune function and the psyche as well as the energy balance: anyone who is tired a lot or exhausted quickly should consider whether they are consuming enough folic acid.
To cover your daily folate requirements, you should regularly eat foods such as green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach and kale), wheat germ, liver, egg yolk, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, nuts, pulses, asparagus, veal/beef and wholegrain products. However, lemon peel, which GSE also uses as a source, is particularly rich in folic acid - certified organic, of course.
