Vitamin B6 - PYRIDOXIN

The nerve vitamin

Vitamin B6 - also known as pyridoxine - is a water-soluble vitamin and belongs to the group of B vitamins.
Strictly speaking, vitamin B6 is the collective name for three similar chemical compounds, all of which are precursors of the activated vitamin pyridoxal phosphate. These are pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. Vitamin B6 must be supplied to the body from outside, but it is contained in many foods, meaning that a vitamin B6 deficiency rarely occurs.
Vitamin B6 plays a decisive role in the body in the formation and conversion of proteins. It is an important coenzyme for the metabolism of amino acids. As a component of enzymes, coenzymes together with these ensure that biochemical reactions take place more quickly. In addition to amino acid metabolism, vitamin B6 is also involved in the metabolism of the central nervous system.
As vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin, it can only be stored in the body to a limited extent. A regular intake of foods containing pyridoxine is necessary to prevent possible deficiency symptoms.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)

  • Contributes to normal energy metabolism
  • contributes to the normal function of the immune system
  • contributes to the normal function of the nervous system
  • contributes to normal psychological function
  • contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells
  • contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity
  • contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism
  • contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism
  • contributes to normal cysteine synthesis
The daily requirement for vitamin B6 is around 1.5 to 2 milligrams. However, as vitamin B6 is particularly important for amino acid metabolism, the daily requirement is heavily dependent on the intake of proteins. The more protein you consume, the more vitamin B6 you need. Strength athletes, for example, have an increased need for vitamin B6. However, women who are pregnant or taking the contraceptive pill, as well as older people, also need more vitamin B6 than the average person.
Vitamin B6 is found in many animal and plant foods - offal, certain types of fish and wholegrain products are particularly rich in vitamin B6.
