Vitamin D is one of very few vitamins that the body does not have to absorb exclusively from food, but can also produce itself (more on this in the next paragraph). You can get it on your plate from fatty fish such as herring and mackerel, egg yolk and some edible mushrooms. If you do not eat these foods regularly (e.g. if you are a vegetarian/vegan), you can and should "top up" this vital vitamin in the form of a good dietary supplement. Sun alone is not always enough
In order for the human body to produce vitamin D itself, it needs a certain amount of sunlight. At least the face, hands and arms should be exposed to enough natural UV radiation every day. Between 10 and 60 minutes per day are discussed for the necessary duration - a dose that is not achievable for everyone, especially in the colder months of the year. There are also numerous factors that influence the extent of the body's own vitamin D production:
- the geographical location (UV radiation is higher in the southern hemisphere than in the north)
- the time of year (the sun shines much stronger in summer than in winter)
- the time of day (the radiation is strongest at midday)
- the weather (every cloud reduces the radiation yield)
- skin type (very light skin produces more vitamin D than darker skin)
- clothing (covered skin cannot produce vitamin D)
- skin care (creams and lotions with a sun protection factor sometimes significantly reduce vitamin D production)
- age (the body's own vitamin D production decreases with age; this is also one of the reasons why older people are more prone to osteoporosis)
- physique (people with a higher body fat percentage can store more vitamin D in these "cushions" for the darker seasons)
Why vitamin D from mushrooms?
