Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids - better than their reputation, but not essential
- Saturated fatty acids are mainly found in animal-based foods such as meat, sausage, eggs, margarine and dairy products and are even synthesized by the body itself. In the body they play a role, for example, as messenger substances for the nervous system and as a source of energy. In large quantities, they are considered problematic because they can have an unfavorable effect on LDL cholesterol. There is normally no shortage of saturated fatty acids, but rather a surplus.
- Monounsaturated, so-called non-essential fatty acids can be synthesized by the body itself and therefore theoretically do not necessarily have to be ingested through food. They are mainly required for good utilization of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K and for a balanced cholesterol level. It is therefore advisable to regularly consume rapeseed and olive oil, nuts, seeds or avocados, which are good sources of monounsaturated fatty acids.
Omega-6 fatty acids - essential, but not deficient
Omega-3 fatty acids - the superstars among the fatty acids
- ALA is the short-chain precursor of EPA and DHA. Relevant amounts of these are found in linseed, perilla and rapeseed oil, chia seeds and walnuts, for example. The disadvantage of ALA is that the body must first gradually convert it into biologically active EPA and DHA. This results in certain losses, so that larger quantities of ALA are required to reach the recommended daily dose.
- The particularly bioavailable long-chain omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are actually only found in fatty fish species such as salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines or herring as well as some algae. To meet the recommended requirement, one of these fish species should be included in the diet at least twice a week (or even better, daily). The omega-3 fish oil capsules from GSE contain 750 mg of certified organic oil from rainbow trout per capsule, which the body can utilize immediately.
